Airboat Troubles
(2008-02-21)
(wgvu) - The offseason closure of a boat
access ramp gate could leave some residents stranded on a Lake St.
Clair island if ice jams disrupt ferry service.
The state Department of Natural Resources closed the gate in
Algonac in December.
Times Herald of Port Huron says that prevents Bob Bryson from
using his airboat to transport people from Harsens Island to the
mainland. The newspaper says about 400 people used Bryson's airboat
last year.
The ramp is the only suitable place in the area for the airboat
to use.
Bryson's airboat operates independently of his brother's auto
ferry service between the St. Clair County island and Clay
Township.
A U.S. Coast Guard cutter transports islanders when ice shuts
down the ferry.
