Fatal Hit and Run
(2008-02-21)
(wgvu) - A 20-year-old man has been jailed on
a $750,000 bond on accusations he was driving drunk when he struck
and killed a 14-year-old pedestrian, then fled on foot.
St. Joseph County authorities say Daniel Turner of Mendon was
hit Sunday on the shoulder of Michigan 60 in Park Township, about
130 miles west-southwest of Detroit.
Assistant Prosecutor Holly Curtis identifies the driver as
Sergio Onofre.
The Kalamazoo Gazette and WMSH-FM say Onofre is charged with
drunken driving causing death, vehicular manslaughter and failing
to stop at a crash scene. He's also charged with repeat drunken
driving and driving with a suspended license.
The sheriff's department says it's unaware whether Onofre has a
lawyer.
