Kitchener factory that supplies GM gets 16-month reprieve
(wgvu) - KITCHENER, Ontario (AP) - Workers have ratified an agreement
that will keep a plant supplying frames for sport utility vehicles
for General Motors Corp. open until at least mid-2010.
The Canadian Auto Workers union says today that members of Local
1451 at the Kitchener Frame Ltd. plant of Martinrea International
Inc. had voted 80 percent yesterday in favor of the accord.
GM is its sole customer.
Local president Mike Devine says the agreement with Martinrea
contains no worker concessions between now and the summer of 2010
but gives workers a little more longevity.
Devine has declined to discuss wage rates or other specifics.
Martinrea had said last week it planned to close the factory in
April 2009.
