Beef Recall
(2008-02-18)
(wgvu) - PORTAGE, Mich. (AP) - Portage Public Schools is reporting
hamburger from the largest beef recall ever in the U.S. had been
served to its students.
It is one of several Michigan districts to have received the
recalled meat.
Food service manager Lance Gerry tells the Kalamazoo Gazette
that the meat was served in taco and spaghetti sauce before the
west Michigan district was notified of the recall.
Grand Rapids and Ann Arbor public schools also report receiving
some of the beef.
State officials say no reports of illnesses have been linked to
the meat.
The U.S. Department of Agriculture says the health threat likely
is small after yesterday's recall of 143 million pounds of frozen
beef from Westland/Hallmark Meat Co. in Southern California.
An undercover video shows crippled and sick animals being shoved
with forklifts.
