NUCLEAR MISTAKE
(2008-02-13)
(wgvu) - S
THE LOADING OF NUCLEAR-TIPPED MISSILES ON A B-52 BOMBER AT A U.S.
AIR BASE LAST AUGUST WAS A BIG SECURITY FAILURE.
LEVIN GAVE A TONGUE-LASHING TO AIR FORCE OFFICERS ON HAND FOR A
HEARING OF THE SENATE ARMED SERVICES COMMITTEE, WHICH HE CHAIRS.
THE B-52 WAS INADVERTENTLY LOADED WITH SIX NUCLEAR-TIPPED CRUISE
MISSILES AND FLOWN FROM AN AIR FORCE BASE IN NORTH DAKOTA TO ONE IN
LOUISIANA.
THE WARHEADS WERE SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN REMOVED FROM THE
MISSILES BEFORE THE MISSILES WERE SHIPPED.
LEVIN SAYS MOST OF THE 132 RECOMMENDATIONS PRODUCED BY THREE
INVESTIGATIONS HAVEN'T BEEN IMPLEMENTED.
