Bush Snubs Great Lakes
with President Bush's proposed federal budget.
The Healing Our Waters-Great Lakes Coalition says the budget
released this week would cut funding for the lakes by 16 percent
next year.
Especially hard hit would be programs to reduce sewer overflows
and prevent the spread of invasive species.
The coalition says there are some bright spots. Bush requests
more money to prevent the Asian carp from getting into the lakes,
which could devastate the fishery. The president also recommends a
slight increase for cleaning up polluted harbors.
But environmental advocates say they'll ask Congress for more.
The shipping industry is also displeased ... because the budget
would cut money for dredging navigation channels at a time when
water levels are low.
