Nail Salon Killing
(2008-02-06)
(wgvu) - He pleaded guilty last month in the fatal
shooting of a man who'd moved his business to Flint because he
thought it would be safer than the Detroit area.
On Tuesday, Thurman Jones was sentenced to 20 to 35 years in
prison in the Sept. 15, 2004 slaying of Joe Nau Dang at his nail
salon in Genesee County's Flint Township.
The 23-year-old Jones pleaded guilty to second-degree murder
following a botched robbery. Police say the 38-year-old Dang was
shot in the back while trying to shield his then-7-year-old son
from the gunman.
Jones read a letter of apology he wrote to the Dang family, his
family and the court. But Dang's wife Lanh Le, a Vietnamese
immigrant, said after the sentencing that she felt Jones should
have been imprisoned for life.
