(wgvu) - STATE OFFICIALS ARE ENLARGING A QUARANTINE ZONE
IN THEIR STRUGGLE TO CONTAIN THE EMERALD ASH BORER.
THE MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF AGRICULTURE SAYS ALL OF MACKINAC
COUNTY IN THE EASTERN UPPER PENINSULA IS NOW UNDER QUARANTINE.
THE LOWER PENINSULA IS ALSO PART OF THE QUARANTINE, WHICH
RESTRICTS THE MOVEMENT OF ASH TREE MATERIALS AND FIREWOOD
CONSISTING OF ASH AND OTHER HARDWOODS.
OFFICIALS SAY PEOPLE MOVING FIREWOOD ARE PRIMARILY RESPONSIBLE
FOR SPREADING THE ASH BORER.
THE INVASIVE BEETLE HAS KILLED 25 MILLION TREES IN MICHIGAN AND
NEIGHBORING STATES SINCE ITS ARRIVAL FROM ASIA IN 2002.
