Grand Rapids gets new police chief
(wgvu) - GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - The city of Grand Rapids has a new
police chief.
But Mayor George Heartwell says someone else should have gotten
the job.
City Manager Kurt Kimball has appointed acting Chief Kevin Belk
to the post.
Captain James Farris has been promoted to the newly
re-established position of deputy chief.
Belk and Farris were two of three finalists vying to replace
former police Chief Harry Dolan.
Dolan left last year to accept a similar job in Raleigh, N.C.
Heartwell tells The Grand Rapids Press that he disagrees with
the hiring decision.
He says Farris is equally qualified and could have bridged
racial divides within the community.
Farris is black, and Belk is white.
