WILLIAM FITZGERALD HAS DIED AT 65. HE PUSHED THROUGH POST-WATERGATE
POLITICAL CHANGES AND TWICE RAN FOR GOVERNOR.
CLOSE FRIEND RICHARD COLE SAYS FITZGERALD DIED YESTERDAY FROM
COLON CANCER AT HIS GROSSE POINTE FARMS HOME.
FITZGERALD WAS ONE OF THE MOST VISIBLE FIGURES IN MICHIGAN
POLITICS THROUGHOUT THE 1970S, WHEN HE SERVED IN THE STATE HOUSE
AND SENATE.
HE'S THE YOUNGEST EVER SENATE MAJORITY LEADER IN STATE HISTORY
AND WAS THE DEMOCRATIC GUBERNATORIAL NOMINEE IN 1978 AT AGE 36.
FITZGERALD LOST TO REPUBLICAN GOVERNOR WILLIAM MILLIKEN, AND
FAILED TO WIN THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINATION IN 1982.
