Michigan says trash sent to state landfills is down 6 percent
Michigan landfills is down 6 percent from last fiscal year.
The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality also says waste
from Canada and other states decreased about 10 percent from the
previous fiscal year.
DEQ Director Steven Chester says it's unclear why Michigan is
disposing of less waste. But he adds that imported trash still
accounts for too much of the waste put into Michigan landfills.
Imported trash accounts for 29 percent of the total. Nineteen
percent of all trash in Michigan landfills comes from Canada.
The DEQ says one factor for less trash may be a 2006 deal with
Ontario to phase out shipments of household trash from Toronto and
other Ontario communities into Michigan.
