Jurors soon to deliberate alleged sexual abuse of female inmates
(wgvu) - ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) - Jurors may start deliberating soon in a
lawsuit alleging widespread sexual abuse of female inmates in
Michigan prisons.
The Ann Arbor News reports the case dates to the 1990s and was
delayed by 11 appeals.
The case against the state Department of Corrections could cost
the state millions of dollars. The Detroit Free Press says the
trial is expected to wrap up Thursday in Washtenaw County after
three weeks of testimony.
Ten former or current female inmates allege sexual assault,
inappropriate touching and harassment, and invasion of privacy by
male staff at female prisons.
The state says it fired workers if allegations were sustained.
But it argues that allegations raised in the suit aren't coming out
until years after the alleged misconduct.
