PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS-STATE WORKERS
(2008-01-31)
(wgvu) - ATTORNEY GENERAL MIKE COX HAS ASKED A
COURT TO STOP THE STATE FROM ALLOWING STATE EMPLOYEES TO HAVE
POLITICAL DONATIONS DEDUCTED FROM THEIR PAYCHECKS.
THE MICHIGAN CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION DECIDED LAST MONTH THAT
STATE WORKERS SHOULD BE ABLE TO RAISE MONEY FOR UNION-BACKED
CANDIDATES AND ISSUES THROUGH PAYROLL DEDUCTIONS.
THE AGENCY'S DECISION CAME DESPITE COX'S WARNING THAT IT DIDN'T
HAVE THE AUTHORITY TO ALLOW SUCH A PROGRAM.
THE REPUBLICAN ATTORNEY GENERAL ALSO SAYS STATE LAW PROHIBITS
THE USE OF GOVERNMENT FUNDS OR OTHER RESOURCES TO MAKE POLITICAL
CONTRIBUTIONS.
A SPOKESMAN FOR THE CIVIL SERVICE COMMISSION SAYS THE AGENCY
WILL REVIEW THE SUIT AND DISCUSS HOW TO PROCEED.
