IMMIGRANT DRIVERS
(2008-01-31)
(wgvu) - MICHIGAN LEGISLATORS PLAN TO BEGIN WORK
TODAY ON FIXING WHAT SOME CONSIDER UNINTENDED CONSEQUENCES OF
MICHIGAN'S REINTERPRETED DRIVER'S LICENSE LAWS.
A STATE SENATE COMMITTEE WILL TACKLE THE ISSUE.
PEOPLE WHO ARE HERE LEGALLY BUT NOT PERMANENT RESIDENTS HAVEN'T
BEEN ABLE TO GET NEW STATE DRIVER'S LICENSES SINCE LAST WEEK.
THAT'S DUE TO RULES IMPLEMENTED BY SECRETARY OF STATE TERRI LYNN
LAND REQUIRING MORE DOCUMENTATION TO GET DRIVER'S LICENSES FOR
FIRST-TIME APPLICANTS.
HER DECISION WAS BASED ON A RECENT OPINION FROM ATTORNEY GENERAL
MIKE COX.
LAND AND OTHERS SAY THEY'D LIKE FOR THOSE HERE LEGALLY AND
TEMPORARILY TO BE ABLE TO GET LICENSES.
