(wgvu) - THE MICHIGAN LIQUOR CONTROL COMMISSION
ESTIMATES THE STATE AND ITS BUSINESSES LOSE ABOUT 14 MILLION
DOLLARS A YEAR IN REVENUE THROUGH ILLEGALLY IMPORTED BOOZE.
THE AGENCY HELPED DEVELOP THE ESTIMATE THROUGH A SURVEY THAT
WENT TO SUPPLIERS, RETAILERS AND LAW ENFORCEMENT AGENCIES.
THE COMMISSION AND LIQUOR DISTRIBUTORS HAVE SOME IDEAS TO FIX
THE PROBLEM.
THEY WANT TO INCREASE PENALTIES FOR LIQUOR SMUGGLING AND HIRE
MORE OFFICERS TO ENFORCE THE LAW.
THEY ALSO WANT MORE X-RAY AND BARCODE SCANNING EQUIPMENT TO BE
USED IN INVESTIGATIONS AND SURVEILLANCE.
