LEGISLATIVE RECALLS
(2008-01-25)
(wgvu) - A CITIZENS GROUP TRYING TO RECALL
STATE REPRESENTATIVE ROBERT DEAN FOR RAISING TAXES IS SUING THE
STATE.
THE GROUP WANTS TO OVERTURN A MICHIGAN LAW THAT PROHIBITS
NONRESIDENTS OF DEAN'S DISTRICT FROM COLLECTING SIGNATURES ON
RECALL PETITIONS.
DEAN IS A GRAND RAPIDS DEMOCRAT WHO IS AMONG AT LEAST 10
LEGISLATORS BEING TARGETED IN RECALL CAMPAIGNS BECAUSE THEY VOTED
FOR TAX INCREASES LAST FALL.
THE SUIT FILED THIS WEEK IN KENT COUNTY SAYS BANNING
NONRESIDENTS OF DEAN'S DISTRICT FROM COLLECTING SIGNATURES VIOLATES
THEIR FIRST AMENDMENT RIGHT TO POLITICAL SPEECH.
THE GROUP HIRED COLLEGE STUDENTS WHO LIVE IN THE DISTRICT TO
STAKE OUT THE POLLS DURING LAST WEEK'S PRIMARY.
