House committee studies juvenile parole issue
(2008-01-23)
(wgvu) - LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Some Michigan lawmakers are making another
attempt to ban the sentencing of juveniles to life in prison
without the chance of parole.
The House Judiciary Committee has heard more than three hours of
emotional testimony today on the matter.
More hearings could be scheduled before the committee votes on
legislation that would change state law.
The American Civil Liberties Union has been working with some
lawmakers to repeal the practice since 2003. But the bills have not
gained enough momentum to pass the Legislature.
About 300 Michigan inmates convicted of crimes committed before
age 18 are serving a life sentence without the possibility of
parole.
