Legislative Recall
(2008-01-18)
(wgvu) - Judges have ruled in favor of activists
trying to recall state House Speaker Andy Dillon and other
lawmakers for backing a tax increase.
On Friday, Wayne County Circuit Judge William Giovan overruled
the county election commission, which said the wording of the
recall petitions was unclear.
A similar ruling favoring recall advocates came Thursday from
Macomb County Circuit Judge Mark Switalski.
The decisions are a blow to Dillon and Democratic House members
Marc Corriveau of Northville, Ed Gaffney of Grosse Pointe Farms and
Steven Bieda of Warren.
Anti-tax groups must collect about 10,000 signatures in the
district of each targeted lawmaker to put a recall question before
voters. They need the signatures by May 1 to qualify for the August
ballot.
