Michigan Senate panel approves state ban of abortion procedure
(2008-01-16)
(wgvu) - LANSING, Mich. (AP) - A state Senate committee has passed
legislation mirroring a federal ban on a procedure opponents call
partial-birth abortion.
The full Senate could vote on the bill next Tuesday, the
anniversary of the Roe v. Wade court decision.
Federal courts have struck down attempts by Michigan to ban the
so-called partial-birth procedure, partly because there weren't
exceptions for the health or life of a mother.
The Supreme Court last year upheld a federal law banning the
abortion method.
Supporters say Michigan should mirror federal law so state and
local prosecutors can charge doctors who perform the procedure, and
send a message that Michigan opposes the method.
Critics say the legislation is a waste of time since the
procedure already is outlawed nationwide.
