Tanker crashes through I-75 guardrail, sets Detroit home ablaze
(2008-01-10)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - A tanker carrying 7,200 gallons of butane crashed
through a freeway guardrail before exploding and setting a nearby
home on fire.
Police say the tanker flipped over the guardrail on Interstate
75 in southwest Detroit and plummeted 30 to 40 feet to the ground.
The cab of the truck became lodged on the freeway barrier which
prevented it from toppling over the edge.
The cause of the accident is under investigation.
The driver is identified as 60-year-old Ronald A. Martinez of
Albion. He was killed in the crash.
Martinez was employed by a Grand Rapids trucking company.
A state transportation official says two lanes of the freeway
are expected to remain closed while repairs are made to support
pillars.
