AUTO TALKS-CAW
(2008-01-10)
(wgvu) - FORD SAYS IT WANTS TO MAKE ITS CANADIAN
FACTORIES MORE COMPETITIVE WITH OTHER OPERATIONS IN UPCOMING
CONTRACT TALKS WITH THE CANADIAN AUTO WORKERS.
BUT CANADIAN UNION BUZZ HARGROVE SAYS THE UNION WON'T AGREE TO
TWO-TIER WAGES AND OTHER CHANGES THAT WERE RATIFIED BY THE UNITED
AUTO WORKERS IN THE U.S.
THE UAW AGREED WITH ALL THREE DETROIT AUTOMAKERS TO A LOWER-TIER
PAY AND BENEFITS SCHEDULE FOR SOME NEW HIRES.
THE NEW HIRES WOULD MAKE AROUND $14 PER HOUR, LESS THAN HALF OF
WHAT CURRENT ASSEMBLY WORKERS MAKE.
THE STRENGTH OF THE CANADIAN DOLLAR ALSO IS PUTTING PRESSURE ON
FACTORIES THERE.
