State Supreme Court Term Limits
Weaver wants justices to be term-limited.
Her plan would limit justices to one term of eight years. That's
the same length of time that now can be served by Michigan's
governor, attorney general and secretary of state.
Weaver's plan also would change how vacancies are filled on the
court prior to elections.
A governor's appointment of a new justice would come only after
an independent committee had made a nonbinding recommendation of
two candidates. The governor's ultimate pick would be subject to
the consent of the state Senate.
Weaver is a Republican who has clashed over court procedures
with her GOP colleagues on the bench.
