Gas Line Explosion
(2008-01-07)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - A contract worker killed in a gas line explosion
on Zug Island has been identified as Thomas Michael Pichler Jr.
The Wayne County medical examiner's office says the 27-year-old
Livonia resident died from multiple injuries as a result of
Saturday afternoon's explosion.
Pichler had been part of a five-man crew working to reroute a
coke oven gas line through part of a blast furnace gas line outside
a U.S. Steel facility on the industrial island just south of
Detroit.
A spokesman for the steel company has said the blast furnace
line exploded.
The four other workers were taken to a local hospital for
observation.
The manmade Zug Island is in the community of River Rouge. It is
surrounded by the Detroit River and branches of the Rouge River.
