(wgvu) - UP TO 16 INCHES OF SNOW HAS FALLEN ON
SOUTHEASTERN MICHIGAN, EXTENDING THE WINTER VACATION FOR STUDENTS AT DOZENS OF SCHOOLS ACROSS THE REGION.
AT LEAST SIX DISTRICTS AND A NUMBER OF PRIVATE SCHOOLS HAVE CANCELED TODAY'S CLASSES.
AUTHORITIES AREN'T REPORTING ANY DEATHS OR SERIOUS INJURIES FROM THE SIX-HOUR BLAST THAT STARTED AROUND MIDNIGHT.
THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE SAYS IT'S THE REGION'S HEAVIEST NEW YEAR'S DAY SNOWSTORM ON RECORD AND UNUSUAL FOR ITS INTENSITY AND SHORT TIMEFRAME.
THE OTTAWA COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE SAID ICY ROADS AND HEAVY SNOW CONTRIBUTED TO A TWO-VEHICLE TRAFFIC ACCIDENT THAT KILLED A 22-YEAR-OLD MAN MONDAY.
