FERTILIZER BAN
(2008-01-02)
(wgvu) - IT'S NOW ILLEGAL FOR OTTAWA COUNTY RESIDENTS TO USE FERTILIZERS CONTAINING PHOSPHORUS ON THEIR LAWNS.
THE COUNTY COMMISSION IN GRAND HAVEN ENACTED THE BAN IN DECEMBER 2006. IT TOOK EFFECT TUESDAY.
RUNOFF OF FERTILIZER CONTAINING PHOSPHORUS CAUSES ALGAE BLOOMS AND OTHER POLLUTION PROBLEMS ON RIVERS AND LAKES. OFFICIALS TELL THE MUSKEGON CHRONICLE THAT DELAYING ENFORCEMENT OF THE BAN HAS
GIVEN TIME TO EDUCATE THE PUBLIC AND RETAILERS ABOUT ALTERNATIVES TO PHOSPHORUS.
THE LAW CALLS FOR A $50 FINE FOR A FIRST OFFENSE. FARMS AND VEGETABLE AND FLOWER GARDENS ARE EXEMPT, AS ARE TURF OR LAWN AREAS IN THE FIRST GROWING SEASON.
