Blind Swimmer
(2007-12-26)
(wgvu) -
EAST GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (AP) - A legally blind Michigan teen is
an inspiration to others on his high school swim team.
Tanis Hooker is a freshman at East Grand Rapids High School.
He says he feels his way in a pool by using the limited vision
in his right eye along with his intuitive powers.
Hooker was born prematurely and entered the world weighing only
about a pound and a half.
His early birth affected the growth of his retinas as well as
his motor skills.
Hooker started to embrace swimming while in elementary school.
He doesn't dive into the water but instead slips in and pushes
off.
Hooker is becoming a faster swimmer. At a meet this month, he
trimmed eight seconds off his previous best time in the 50-yard
freestyle.
