Fired U.S. Attorney
(2007-12-17)
(wgvu) - KALAMAZOO, Mich. (AP) - Margaret Chiara says she kept a low
profile after being fired as the chief federal prosecutor for
western Michigan partly to help improve her chances of getting
another job.
Chiara tells the Kalamazoo Gazette that since September she has
been serving as general counsel for a bipartisan federal commission
in Washington that is studying prison rape.
A scandal surfaced in January after it was reported that Chiara
and other U.S. attorneys were fired and that the dismissals may
have been politically motivated.
Former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales and several other top
officials at the Justice Department ended up resigning. The
agency's inspector general is investigating whether Gonzales lied
to Congress about the motivation behind the firings.
