(wgvu) - - THE STATE SENATE HAS THROWN UP A ROADBLOCK
TO EFFORTS TO BAN SMOKING IN MICHIGAN BARS, RESTAURANTS AND OTHER
WORKPLACES.
MAJORITY REPUBLICANS SENT THE SMOKING BAN MEASURE TO THE
GOVERNMENT OPERATIONS COMMITTEE, WHERE MANY BILLS GO TO DIE.
DEMOCRATS TRIED TO STEER IT TO THE HEALTH POLICY COMMITTEE,
WHOSE REPUBLICAN CHAIRMAN SUPPORTS THE BAN.
REPUBLICAN MAJORITY LEADER MIKE BISHOP SAYS WORKPLACES SHOULD BE
FREE TO DECIDE WHETHER TO ALLOW SMOKING OR NOT.
THE DEMOCRATIC-LED STATE HOUSE PASSED THE BAN LAST WEEK.
