SANTA EXPRESS-CRASH
(2007-12-10)
(wgvu) - TRAGEDY IN MID-MICHIGAN, WHERE
TWO PEOPLE DIED IN A COLLISION BETWEEN A CAR AND A TRAIN CARRYING
MOSTLY CHILDREN ON A VISIT TO SANTA CLAUS.
THE CRASH HAPPENED SATURDAY AFTERNOON AT A RAILROAD CROSSING IN
ISABELLA TOWNSHIP, NEAR MOUNT PLEASANT. AUTHORITIES SAY NONE OF THE
67 PASSENGERS ABOARD THE "SANTA EXPRESS" TRAIN WERE INJURED.
THE ISABELLA COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT SAYS THE DRIVER OF THE
CAR, JENNIFER VANBUSKIRK, AND PASSENGER ALLEN PEGO DIED. BOTH WERE
31 AND RESIDENTS OF MOUNT PLEASANT.
A SECOND PASSENGER IN THE CAR WAS HOSPITALIZED IN STABLE
CONDITION AT A FLINT HOSPITAL.
THE CROSSING HAS A STOP SIGN AND RAILROAD CROSSING SIGN TO WARN
DRIVERS, BUT NO WARNING LIGHTS. THE TRAIN WAS HEADED FROM MOUNT
PLEASANT TO CLARE, ABOUT 16 MILES AWAY.
