Great Lakes Compact update
(2007-12-05)
(wgvu) - The Michigan Legislature has started
passing a regional compact to prevent Great Lakes water from being
sent to thirsty regions.
But final approval isn't expected until January at the earliest.
That's because of disputes among lawmakers, environmentalists and
businesses over related legislation involving large-scale water
withdrawals from lakes and waterways.
House and Senate committees approved the compact on Wednesday.
All eight states adjoining the Great Lakes must ratify the
compact for it to take effect. It also must be approved by
Congress.
