Harry Potter Problems
(2007-12-05)
(wgvu) - A group of Stanford Law School property lawyers
say they will help defend Muskegon, Mich.-based RDR Books in a
lawsuit by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling.
The publisher had planned to release "The Harry Potter
Lexicon" this fall. The work is an unauthorized companion guide to
Rowling's popular series.
The book's publication has been blocked by Rowling's lawsuit.
A Fair Use Project spokesman says the lexicon is protected by
U.S. rules giving people the right to create reference guides,
discuss literary works and comment on them.
Rowling and Warner Bros. have argued that the lexicon borrows
too heavily from the books and amounts to copyright and trademark
infringement. Warner Bros. produces the Harry Potter movies and
holds the copyright on the seven novels.
