Michigan AG Upset with BC
(2007-12-03)
(wgvu) - Michigan's attorney general is blasting
Blue Cross Blue Shield for backing legislation he says puts profits
over people.
Mike Cox says bills passed by the state House in October would
force seniors and sick citizens to pay more for health care and let
Blue Cross deny coverage for pre-existing illnesses for a longer
period of time.
Blue Cross has a unique role in Michigan. It's exempt from state
taxes and in return is the state's insurer of last resort.
Cox says Blue Cross wants to keep its tax-exempt status but
triple its ability to make profits.
Blue Cross says the bills would allow Michigan residents buying
their own individual health insurance plans to get price and
coverage protection.
The legislation currently is in the Senate.
