SERVICE TAX
(2007-11-30)
(wgvu) - MANY BUSINESSES ARE BRACING FOR A 6
PERCENT TAX ON SOME TYPES OF SERVICES THAT'S SET TO TAKE EFFECT
TOMORROW.
BOTH MAJOR PARTIES SAY THEY WANT TO HALT THE NEW TAX, BUT
THEY'RE DEADLOCKED OVER HOW.
DEMOCRATS WANT TO RAISE THE STATE'S MAIN BUSINESS TAX, WHILE
REPUBLICANS WANT ONLY A TEMPORARY SURCHARGE ON IT.
THE SERVICES TAX IS DESIGNED TO RAISE 750 MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR
AND WOULD APPLY TO SKI RESORTS, LANDSCAPERS, CONSULTANTS, SOME
HAIRDRESSERS, ASTROLOGERS AND MANY OTHER BUSINESSES.
THE ONLY HOPE OF AVOIDING THE TAX IS SOME LAST-MINUTE ACTION BY
THE LEGISLATURE TODAY.
