UAW-Retiree Benefits
(2007-11-29)
(wgvu) - DETROIT (AP) - UAW control of retiree health care for the
Detroit Three could be a catalyst for change.
A Detroit Medical Center official says the union's deal with the
automakers could bring a major change in the way health care is
priced and delivered.
Billions of dollars in retiree health care costs will be shifted
to the United Auto Workers under new contracts with General Motors,
Ford and Chrysler.
The union becomes responsible for the health care bills of
540,000 retirees and their spouses by early 2010.
Some experts say the numbers give the UAW bulk buying power and
enough clout to bring costs down. Retirees also will have
incentives to live healthier and limit their health care use.
