Coal Plants
(2007-11-27)
(wgvu) - LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Opponents of coal-fired power plants in
Michigan want a ban against new plants until the Legislature
requires the use of more renewable energy.
At least seven power companies have sought to build new coal
plants or expand existing coal plants in the state since January.
Environmentalists who blame coal burning for contributing to
global warming are protesting around the state. The sites are
located in or near Alma, Bay City, Manistee, Marquette, Midland and
Rogers City.
Coal's defenders say newer, cleaner coal plants use less coal
and discharge less pollution.
