Firefighters Take on Anti-terrorism Role
(2007-11-23)
(wgvu) - WASHINGTON (AP) - Homeland Security is testing a program that
teaches New York City firefighters how to look out for possible
terrorism.
The program shares intelligence so firefighters are better
prepared when they respond to emergency calls.
New York City fire services also gets training in identifying
material or behavior that may indicate terrorist activities. The
government intends to expand the program to other major
metropolitan areas if it is successful.
Critics say that might infringe on people's privacy.
Detroit does not conduct this type of intelligence training.
Deputy fire commissioner Seth Doyle says Detroit firefighters
receive hazardous materials training, but not the details that New
York firefighters are now on the lookout for.
