TERM LIMITS
(2007-11-19)
(wgvu) - - EFFORTS TO LET MICHIGAN LAWMAKERS SERVE
MORE TIME IN THE HOUSE AND SENATE BY EXTENDING TERM LIMITS APPEAR
STALLED FOR THE MOMENT.
BUT THE FIGHT TO CHANGE THE 1992 CONSTITUTIONAL AMENDMENT THAT
PUT TERM LIMITS IN PLACE COULD RESURFACE NEXT YEAR.
THE MICHIGAN CHAMBER OF COMMERCE AND OTHERS WHO WANT TO EXTEND
TERM LIMITS SAY RESTRICTING HOUSE MEMBERS TO SIX YEARS AND SENATORS
TO EIGHT LEAVES LAWMAKERS TOO INEXPERIENCED TO COPE WITH THE
STATE'S COMPLEX PROBLEMS.
AS AN EXAMPLE, THEY POINT TO THE HURRIEDLY PASSED AND SOON-TO-BE
REPEALED SALES TAX ON SOME SERVICES.
BUT TERM LIMITS SUPPORTERS SAY IT'S CLEAR VOTERS FAVOR THE
CURRENT SYSTEM, AND THAT'S WHY LAWMAKERS AND INTEREST GROUPS
HAVEN'T BEEN ABLE TO GET A PROPOSAL TO CHANGE IT ON THE BALLOT.
