(2007-11-16)
(wgvu) - FORMER MONTCALM COUNTY PATIENTS OF A DISGRACED GRAND RAPIDS DOCTOR WORRIED ABOUT THEIR HEALTH CAN VISIT A SPECIAL CLINIC NEXT WEEK. THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE WHO SAW DERMATOLOGIST DR. ROBERT STOKES HAVE GOTTEN WARNING LETTERS FROM THE KENT COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT.
AN INVESTIGATION FOUND THAT STOKES RE-USED DISPOSABLE NEEDLES AND FAILED TO PROPERLY STERLIZE INSTRUMENTS, POTENTIALLY PUTTING PATIENTS AT RISK OF HEPATITIS AND THE AIDS VIRUS.
THE MID-MICHIGAN DISTRICT HEALTH DEPARTMENT HAS SCHEDULED A ONE DAY CLINIC FOR STOKES' FORMER PATIENTS CURRENTLY WITHOUT A PRIMARY CARE PROVIDER SO THEY CAN LEARN MORE ABOUT THE RISK.
DIRECTOR DR. ROBERT GRAHAM STRESSES THE POTENTIAL FOR ANYBODY CONTRACTING AN INFECTION IS REALLY QUITE LOW - BUT THEY'RE ASKING THOOSE PATIENTS TO COME IN FOR A CHECK JUST TO BE SURE.
THE CLINIC IS NEXT TUESDAY AT THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT IN STANTON AND YOU DO NEED AN APPOINTMENT.
THE KENT COUNTY HEALTH DEPARTMENT RECENTLY SENT LETTERS TO NEARLY 5,000 OF STOKES' FORMER PATIENTS, RECOMMENDING THEY BE TESTED. ABOUT 20% OF THAT NUMBER LIVE IN MONTCALM COUNTY.
