Jackson Area Prison Closes
(2007-11-12)
(wgvu) - BLACKMAN TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - The Southern Michigan
Correctional Facility in Jackson County will shut down on Saturday.
The closure of the Blackman Township prison comes nine months
after state officials decided to shutter it.
Southern Michigan Correctional has been open in some capacity
since 1934.
Michigan Department of Corrections spokesman Russ Marlan tells
the Jackson Citizen Patriot the state expects the closure to save
about $38 million a year.
All of the 1,400-bed facility's inmates have been lodged at
other Michigan prisons.
About 300 prisoners were moved in July. And 606 medically
fragile inmates were moved in the last month to facilities
throughout the state.
Most remaining employees received word on November 1st of their
new assignments in the corrections department.
