MARATHONER-FUNERAL
(2007-11-12)
(wgvu) -
FRIENDS AND RELATIVES GATHERED AT A
NORTHERN MICHIGAN CHURCH TO MOURN THE UNEXPECTED DEATH OF MARATHON
RUNNER RYAN SHAY.
HUNDREDS ATTENDED THE NEARLY THREE-HOUR FUNERAL YESTERDAY AT THE
HARVEST BARN WORD OF LIFE CHURCH. SHAY'S COLLEGE AND PROFESSIONAL
COACHES DELIVERED EULOGIES.
THE 28-YEAR-OLD RUNNER COLLAPSED AND DIED NOVEMBER 3RD DURING
THE U.S. OLYMPIC TRIALS IN NEW YORK. THE CAUSE OF DEATH STILL
HASN'T BEEN UNDETERMINED.
HE WAS BURIED AS DARKNESS FELL AT A CEMETERY NEAR HIS HOMETOWN
OF CENTRAL LAKE. THE FUNERAL PROCESSION'S ROUTE WENT PAST THE
FIELDS AND TREES WHERE SHAY RAN AS A TEENAGER.
SHAY WON 11 STATE HIGH SCHOOL RUNNING TITLES AND WAS AN
ALL-AMERICA AT NOTRE DAME.
