WATER PROJECTS-MICHIGAN
(2007-11-09)
(wgvu) - - MICHIGAN DEMOCRATS CARL LEVIN AND DEBBIE
STABENOW HELPED THE SENATE OVERRIDE PRESIDENT BUSH'S VETO OF A BILL
THAT WOULD SUPPORT WATER PROJECTS IN THE GREAT LAKES REGION.
THE SENATE JOINED THE HOUSE IN OVERRIDING BUSH'S VETO OF THE
$23.2-BILLION WATER RESOURCES BILL YESTERDAY. THE ENTIRE MICHIGAN
DELEGATION SUPPORTED THE OVERRIDE.
THE BILL AUTHORIZES $342 MILLION FOR A COMMERCIAL SHIPPING LOCK
AT SAULT SAINTE MARIE AND $20 MILLION TO CLEAN UP THE SAINT CLAIR
RIVER AND LAKE SAINT CLAIR. IT ALSO ALLOWS FUNDING FOR A BARRIER TO
STOP THE SPREAD OF THE ASIAN CARP AND OTHER INVASIVE SPECIES.
LEVIN SAYS THE VOTE SHOWS THE SENATE WILL FIGHT TO PROTECT THE
GREAT LAKES FROM INVASIVE SPECIES AND MAKE THE STATE'S WATERS SAFE
AND CLEAN.
