SERVICE TAX
(2007-11-09)
(wgvu) - THE STATE HOUSE VOTES TO KILL A
MUCH-MALIGNED TAX ON SERVICES.
THE MEASURE APPROVED LAST NIGHT ALSO WOULD REPLACE HUNDREDS OF
MILLIONS IN LOST REVENUE BY RAISING MICHIGAN'S MAIN BUSINESS TAX.
THE BILL PASSED BY A 58-48 VOTE. DEMOCRATS IN THE MAJORITY
SUPPORTED IT, WHILE ALL BUT TWO REPUBLICANS OPPOSED THE MEASURE.
THE SENATE HASN'T TAKEN FINAL ACTION ON THE LEGISLATION.
NEGOTIATIONS WILL CONTINUE IN COMING WEEKS BECAUSE REPUBLICANS
WHO CONTROL THE SENATE WANT THE REPLACEMENT TAX HIKE TO BE
TEMPORARY. THERE'S ALSO DISAGREEMENT OVER HOW MUCH EXTRA IN TAXES
COMPANIES SHOULD PAY.
THE 6-PERCENT SALES TAX ON A VARIETY OF SERVICES WAS TO TAKE
EFFECT DECEMBER 1ST.
