SERVICE TAX
(2007-11-08)
(wgvu) -
- THE REPUBLICAN-LED MICHIGAN SENATE HAS
VOTED TO REPEAL A NEW TAX ON SERVICES THAT IS SET TO TAKE EFFECT
DECEMBER FIRST.
THE TAX WOULD BRING IN ABOUT 750 (M) MILLION DOLLARS A YEAR, AND
DEMOCRATS SAY THE MONEY IS VITAL TO BALANCING STATE GOVERNMENT'S
BUDGET.
TODAY, THE DEMOCRATIC-LED HOUSE COULD PASS A PLAN REPLACING THE
SERVICE TAX WITH A SURCHARGE ON THE NEW STATE BUSINESS TAX THAT
TAKES EFFECT JANUARY FIRST.
BUSINESSES SAY THE SERVICES TAX IS CONFUSING AND UNFAIR BECAUSE
IT TAXES SOME ACTIVITIES SUCH AS CONSULTING, GRAPHIC DESIGN AND
SKIING BUT NOT OTHERS.
