AUTO TALKS

(wgvu) - - CONTRACT TALKS ARE CONTINUING DAILY BETWEEN FORD
AND THE UNITED AUTO WORKERS.
UNION LEADERS SAY LITTLE IS LEAKING OUT ABOUT THE PROGRESS OF
THE TALKS.
AMONG THE ISSUES BEING NEGOTIATED IS THE LEVEL OF FINANCING FOR
A UNION-RUN TRUST THAT WOULD TAKE OVER FORD'S RETIREE HEALTH CARE
OBLIGATIONS.
ANOTHER ISSUE IS THE NUMBER OF WORKERS WHO'LL GET A LOWER PAY
RATE.
THE FOUR-YEAR CONTRACT EXPIRED SEPTEMBER 14TH BUT IS BEING
EXTENDED WHILE NEGOTIATIONS CONTINUE.
THE CONTRACT COVERS ABOUT 60,000 U.S. HOURLY WORKERS.
THE UAW EARLIER REACHED NEW DEALS WITH GENERAL MOTORS AND
CHRYSLER.
