SERVICE TAX
(2007-11-02)
(wgvu) - THE REPUBLICAN-LED MICHIGAN SENATE HAS
VOTED TO DELAY THE START DATE OF A TAX ON MORE SERVICES SET TO TAKE
EFFECT IN LESS THAN A MONTH.
THE MOVE BUYS TIME FOR THE LEGISLATURE TO REPEAL THE TAX
OUTRIGHT AND REPLACE THE LOST REVENUE WITH SOMETHING ELSE.
DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR GRANHOLM SAYS THE STATE MUST REPLACE ANY
REVENUE IT LOSES IF THE TAX IS REPEALED.
THE LEGISLATION THAT PASSED YESTERDAY WOULD CHANGE THE START
DATE OF THE TAX FROM DECEMBER 1ST TO DECEMBER 20TH.
THE DELAY IS LINKED TO A BILL THAT WOULD REPEAL THE SERVICE TAX,
AND THAT MEASURE COULD BE VOTED ON AS EARLY AS NEXT WEEK.
