STATE BUDGET
(2007-10-30)
(wgvu) - WITH ONE DAY TO GO BEFORE A SELF IMPOSED DEADLINE, LAWMAKERS AND THE GOVERNOR REMAIN DIVIDED OVER WHETHER MORE PRIVATE PROVIDERS SHOULD HANDLE ADOPTION, FOSTER CARE AND JUVENILE JUSTICE SERVICES.
THE DISPUTE IS THE LAST BIG STICKING POINT IN RESOLVING A 433
MILLION-DOLLAR BUDGET DEFICIT.
THE LEGISLATURE HAS UNTIL TOMORROW TO PASS THE BUDGET BILLS TO
AVOID A PARTIAL GOVERNMENT SHUTDOWN LIKE THE ONE THAT HAPPENED FOR
SEVERAL HOURS OCTOBER FIRST.
CONFERENCE COMMITTEES HAVE BEEN PASSING SPENDING PLANS FOR
UNIVERSITIES AND STATE DEPARTMENTS.
REPUBLICANS PROPOSE HAVING PRIVATE COMPANIES HOUSE YOUNG
CRIMINALS, SOMETHING THAT THE DEMOCRATIC GOVERNOR AND LABOR UNIONS
OPPOSE.
