KENNECOTT MINE
(2007-10-19)
(wgvu) - SPECIALISTS HIRED BY AN
ENVIRONMENTAL GROUP ARE ATTACKING A PROPOSED NICKEL AND COPPER MINE
IN THE UPPER PENINSULA.
THE NATIONAL WILDLIFE FEDERATION SAID YESTERDAY IT HAD ASSEMBLED
EXPERTS TO STUDY THE MINE APPLICATION SUBMITTED BY KENNECOTT
MINERALS COMPANY.
THE EXPERTS ACCUSED THE COMPANY OF USING FLAWED TESTING AND
UNREALISTIC ASSUMPTIONS.
THEY WERE PARTICULARLY CRITICAL OF KENNECOTT'S ASSURANCES ABOUT
THE STABILITY OF THE MINE'S BEDROCK ROOF AND THE POTENTIAL FOR
AVOIDING WATER POLLUTION.
COMPANY OFFICIALS DEFENDED THEIR CALCULATIONS AND SAID THE
MICHIGAN DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY SUPPORTED THEM AS
WELL.
THE DEQ COULD DECIDE AS EARLY AS MID-NOVEMBER WHETHER TO ISSUE
PERMITS FOR THE MINE.
