DETROIT MAYOR-INVESTIGATION
(2007-10-19)
(wgvu) - THE CITY AND MAYOR KWAME KILPATRICK ARE EXPECTED
TO DROP THEIR PLANNED APPEAL OF A $6.5 MILLION JUDGMENT AGAINST
THEM IN A WHISTLEBLOWER LAWSUIT FILED BY TWO FORMER POLICE
OFFICERS.
THE DETROIT NEWS AND DETROIT FREE PRESS REPORT KILPATRICK'S
STAFF HAS SUBMITTED DOCUMENTS TO THE CITY COUNCIL RELATED TO A
POSSIBLE SETTLEMENT. THE CITY ALSO SEEKS TO SETTLE A SUIT FILED BY
FORMER BODYGUARD WALT HARRIS BEFORE THAT CASE GOES TO TRIAL.
THE SETTLEMENTS TOTAL MORE THAN $8 MILLION.
FORMER OFFICERS GARY BROWN AND HAROLD NELTHROPE ALLEGED
EXTRAMARITAL AFFAIRS BY KILPATRICK AND OTHER MISDEEDS BY HIS
SECURITY UNIT. A WAYNE COUNTY CIRCUIT COURT JURY LAST MONTH AGREED
THE MAYOR AND CITY UNLAWFULLY DISMISSED THEM.
KILPATRICK DENIED THE ALLEGATIONS AND VOWED TO APPEAL THE
VERDICT.
