GOP HOUSE LEADERSHIP
(2007-10-17)
(wgvu) - - STATE HOUSE REPUBLICANS EXPECT TO PICK A
NEW SECOND-IN-COMMAND FOR THEIR CAUCUS LATER THIS WEEK.
THE GOP WILL VOTE ON A NEW FLOOR LEADER TO REPLACE REP. CHRIS
WARD OF BRIGHTON ON THURSDAY.
WARD WILL KEEP HIS SEAT IN THE HOUSE BUT HAS RESIGNED HIS
LEADERSHIP POST.
DEMOCRATS HOLD A 58-52 EDGE OVER REPUBLICANS IN THE HOUSE.
WARD VOTED IN FAVOR OF RAISING THE STATE'S INCOME TAX RATE AS
PART OF A STRATEGY TO ELIMINATE A PROJECTED $1.75 BILLION BUDGET
DEFICIT FOR THE NEW FISCAL YEAR.
THE VOTE HAS MADE HIM ONE OF AT LEAST FIVE REPUBLICANS WHO COULD
BE TARGETS FOR POSSIBLE RECALL ELECTIONS.
