Acid Leak
after a hydrochloric acid leak at a metal finishing plant in
Melvindale.
A spokeswoman says Oakwood Hospital is treating a Melvindale
resident for respiratory symptoms. She says the patient is in
stable condition.
The acid leaked from a tank on the roof of Reilly Plating
Company southwest of Detroit. Fire Chief Scott Wellman says the leak has been contained.
Authorities evacuated about 3,000 people. A high school as well
as a middle and an elementary school in the half-square-mile
evacuation zone were cleared as a precaution.
Hydrochloric acid is a highly corrosive liquid that can cause
burns if it comes into direct contact with skin or eyes.
